FAQ

Can I restart a new batch of yogurt with my previous yogurt?
Yes, save two tablespoons of your previous batch to inoculate your next batch of yogurt. However, after two to three times, you will need to use a new packet of starter. This is true for the Yogourmet Kefir Starter as well.

Can I use raw milk and do I have to boil it?
Yes, you can use raw milk. We do recommend that you follow the directions on our packaging and heat the milk to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. However others that do not boil the raw have been successful, but not 100% of the time.

What types of milk can be used with the Yogourmet starters?
Cow, Soy, and Goat’s milk.

Can I add fruit or flavorings to my yogurt or kefir?
Yes, you can add it to the yogurt or kefir after it has been made.

How can I bypass boiling the milk?
You can bypass it by using UHT milk. (Ultra High Temperature) For example, Parmalat Brand milk or Yogourmet UHT Skim milk Powder.

What temperature do I need to heat the milk to and what temperature do I need to cool the milk down to before I add the yogurt starter?
First, bring the milk to 180 degrees Fahrenheit and then let the milk cool back down to 110 degrees before adding the yogurt starter.

What temperature do I need to heat the milk to and what temperature do I need to cool the milk down to before adding the kefir starter?
First, bring the milk to 180 degrees Fahrenheit and then let the milk cool back down to 72 degrees before adding the kefir starter.

If I am using powder milk, do I have to boil the milk first?
If the milk powder you are using is UHT milk, then no, you do not need to boil it. If it is non-UHT, please follow the directions on the box of starter.

Can I manually adjust the temperature on the Yogourmet Yogurt Maker?
No. The Yogourmet Yogurt Maker is preset to increase gradually to 114 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ultimate Nourishment's Inside Scoop:
The Yogourmet Yogurt Maker has the ability to use your own glass container instead of the batch container the Yogourmet comes with. By taking out the batch jar that the Yogourmet comes with and inserting your own glass quart canning jar, your yogurt would not be cooking inside a plastic container and is a healthier way to prepare your yogurt.

Tips on making homemade yogurt in your yogurt maker:

  • Add powdered milk to enhance thickening of yogurt

  • To produce an even thicker yogurt, add a package (one tablespoon or 1/4 oz, 7 g) of unflavored gelatin. Mix the gelatin with a little milk until it has dissolved, then add it to your cold milk and follow each step of the yogurt-making procedure as instructed.

  • You can also add a combination of gelatin and powdered milk to create your own individual taste.

  • Do not overcook yogurt. Overcooking yogurt yields a pungent sour taste.

  • The fresher the yogurt starter or organic yogurt used for starter, the better your homemade yogurt will be. It is the active live cultures that are necessary to start the culture process in your batch.

  • Add 100% maple syrup to your recipe for a natural sweetener.

  • Once homemade yogurt has cooked in your Yogurt Maker, allow at least a few hours to gel in the refrigerator.

  • Homemade yogurt from your Yogurt Maker will never turn out as thick of yogurt as commercially store bought yogurt. Commercial yogurt adds any or all of the following to enhance thickening: guar gum, gum arabic, locust bean gum, xanthan gum, modified cornstarch, gelatin, and potassium and sodium phosphate. However, you can achieve a thicker consistency with your homemade yogurt by adding 1-2 tsp of powered milk and a larger amount of 'starter' to your mix.
